State law bars help on drug costs

BOSTON — For the last 13 years,  Joan Shaughnessey, 50, a mother of two, has injected herself with the drug Copaxone to avoid the debilitating effects of Multiple Scelerosis, a chronic neurological disease with no cure.

The medication costs her $8,000 a year. Saving for her daughters’ college education is nearly impossible because of the financial burden of the medication.

The drug company itself offers a discount that would cost Shaughnessey no more than $35 per month, but that discount is illegal in Massachusetts
